BINOCULAR FIELD NOTES / OBSERVER'S NOTES

Look closely at the lunar landscape

Everything here can be practiced a little at a time, from wherever you can see the sky.

01 / 04

Start without magnification

Identify the overall phase and a few large light and dark areas. These broad markings remain recognisable as your observing skills improve.

02 / 04

Find the terminator

The boundary between lit and unlit terrain often shows long shadows. Comparing its position on different evenings reveals fresh detail.

03 / 04

Use a steady view

Rest your elbows or support binoculars to make smaller features easier to see. Never look at the Sun through unfiltered optics.

04 / 04

Use stable support

Resting binoculars against a railing or using a tripod can reveal more detail than simply increasing magnification.
